Liberty City is located southeast in the department San José, on National Route No. 1. Located 52 km from Montevideo and 41 kms of San José de Mayo.

Its name derives from the wishes of the first settlers in the area, many of whom were French immigrants from Alsace and Lorraine fleeing the invasion of their territories by the German Empire (during the Franco-Prussian War) and went in search of freedom.
